TEHRAN – Iranian President Hassan Rouhani said on Sunday that European countries should fulfill their humanitarian duty toward refugees who are flooding into Europe from fear of terrorist acts.
Rouhani made the remarks in a meeting with Yanosh Kwach, the new Hungarian ambassador to Tehran. In recent months, tens of thousands of refugees have fled war-torn countries -- including Syria, Iraq, and Afghanistan – and have sought refuge in Europe.
Rouhani expressed satisfaction over positive approach adopted by some of European countries to help the refugees.
According to CNN, Austrian and German officials have agreed to allow thousands of migrants into their countries, Austrian Chancellor Werner Faymann said on Saturday.
The UNHCR said it “welcomes the decision of Austria and Germany to receive thousands of refugees and migrants who crossed the border last night from Hungary. This is political leadership based on humanitarian values.”
And it's not just the politicians who have extended a hand. Some individuals in Vienna are donating train tickets for refugees heading onwards across Europe, the UNHCR said, while others elsewhere are giving food and supplies.
----- ‘Center of security and stability’
In his meeting with the Hungarian diplomat, Rouhani also highlighted the necessity of fighting terrorism.
The president also said that Iran and Hungary should expand “positive and constructive” relations.
Kwach said Hungary is determined to boost ties with Iran and described Iran as the “center of security and stability” in the Middle East region.
The nuclear agreement between Iran and the 5+1 group - the United States, Britain, France, China and Russia plus Germany – is a good example of resolving international problems, the ambassador added.
Iran and the six major powers finalized the text of an agreement in Vienna on July 14.
